Growing herbs in pots is a great solution when you do not have a plot of land of at least four feet by six feet in which to cultivate an herb garden outdoors.
But just because you do not have four feet by six feet of land outdoors it does not mean that you cannot have your herb garden outside. Growing herbs in pots makes that possible as you can easily arrange your herb pots on the patio outside. And should frost threaten, you can simply bring your herbs pots indoors temporarily until the threat is past.
Growing herbs in pots has the added advantage that you will not be limited by size as you can use whatever size container you wish to create your own unique indoors herbs garden. Your pots can be as big or as small as you wish. You can even have your herb garden consisting of just a few plants in five inch pots that sit on your kitchen windowsill or a bigger arrangement of ornamental herbs with beautiful flowers in 12 inch pots in your front lobby.
Another good idea would be to have a few pots of culinary herbs in 12 inch pots sitting just outside your kitchen door. Indeed growing herbs in pots is so versatile that it is limited only by your creativity and imagination.
Growing herbs in pots also lets you use whatever container you have, like old pails, teapots, tyres and so on to create the theme that will allow you to express your artistic creativity.
Yet another advantage of growing herbs in pots is that you can reduce the size of your herb garden to one that is appropriate to the amount of maintenance time you would be prepared to spend on it. The smaller the number of pots, the less work will be required.
The maintenance routine can also be significantly reduced if your growing herbs in pots is contained in a specially manufactured herb garden kit. I think of herb garden kits as hobby kits where any effort required to maintain it properly has been reduced to a minimum and any work left is viewed more like fun than a chore. And these kits look good and can be placed anywhere in the house where the whole family can enjoy the exploits of the plants from the seed stage to harvest time!
In short, growing herbs in pots can be tailored to fit any person's lifestyle and tastes. Why not start with just a few 5-inch pots of herbs on your kitchen windowsill. You might just have found the hobby you have been looking for.

I am not sure if this will work for you but you could sprinkle some pepper on the rim of the pot. I understand that this will discourage cats from staying anywhere near the pots. They do not like the smell of pepper. In time they will have been "trained" to keep awayTry this and let me know if it works for you.Happy gardening!
